- Simultaneous interpreting
This type of translation is especially appropriate for larger conferences where several languages are spoken. Due to the extreme high level of necessary concentration the translators usually work in teams and exchange one another after half an hour. During simultaneous interpreting the interpreter usually is in a soundproof cabin with a view on the conference room. The speaker’s text is being transferred via a microphone directly to the headphones of the interpreter who interprets the text with a minimal delay – therefore the appellation simultaneous – to another language. The participants listen to the interpretation through headphones as well. - Consecutive interpreting
During this type of translation the interpreter is located together with the participants in the conference room and transfers the words of the speaker with a delay. In the meantime the speaker performs the lecture in several parts with the length of three to twelve minutes, while the interpreter interprets every part separately. Therefore the lecture during consecutive interpreting lasts the double time. Because of the delay this type of translation is especially appropriate for events with a limited number of participants and the usage of only two languages.
